dignity lifeINTERNATIONAL

Before you let your policy go, let us assess it.

Dignity Life International buys qualifying life insurance policies in South Africa. If your premiums have become hard to keep up, or you no longer need the cover, find out whether your policy can be sold before you cancel it or let it lapse.

The assessment is free. There is no obligation to accept an offer.

The earlier we see a policy, the more we can do.

Most policies we assess come to us at one of three moments. Once a policy has lapsed, there is usually nothing left to sell.

  1. Thinking about cancelling

The cover no longer fits your life. Before you call the insurer, ask us whether the policy has a value to sell.

  2. Struggling with premiums

Retirement, debt or a change in income has made the monthly payment hard to justify.

  3. Close to lapsing

Premiums have been missed and the insurer has been in touch. Contact us now, while the policy is still in force.

  4. Lapsed

The cover ends, and years of premiums usually end with it.

Other reasons people sell

There is no single reason. We don't tell anyone what to decide. We give you one more option to consider.

  • The policy is no longer needed
  • You are retiring, or have retired
  • Your children are now financially independent
  • Your estate plan has changed
  • You need cash now more than cover later
  • You are restructuring your assets
  • You want to know what it is worth today

What selling your policy means

When a sale is complete, you receive an agreed cash settlement and Dignity Life International takes over the policy and its future premiums.

Selling ends your family's claim on the policy. If you're unsure whether to keep, surrender, replace or sell a policy, speak to an authorised financial adviser first. We are not financial advisers, and we'll encourage you to get independent advice.

How a sale works, from first call to settlement

Nine steps, each documented. You can stop at any point before you sign.

Assessment

  1. 1
    Tell us about the policy

Basic details: insurer, cover amount and premium.

  2. 2
    Initial screening

We check the policy against our criteria. Not every policy qualifies.

  3. 3
    Information and due diligence

We request policy documents and ownership details. Medical information is only requested with your written consent.

  4. 4
    Valuation

We work out what the policy is worth to us, using the factors below.

Offer and agreement

  1. 5
    Offer

If the policy suits us, we make a written offer. You are free to accept or decline.

  2. 6
    Contract documents

Acquisition agreement, cession documents, declarations and consents, explained before you sign.

  3. 7
    Insurer process

We submit the paperwork to your insurer and follow its requirements for noting the outright cession on the life policy.

Settlement

  1. 8
    You are paid

Once every condition is met, we pay the agreed settlement as set out in the agreement.

  2. 9
    We take over the policy

We pay the future premiums and administer the policy for the rest of its life.

What we look at when we value a policy

Every policy is different, so we don't pay a fixed percentage of the cover amount. We won't quote a figure until the policy has been properly assessed.

Policy benefit
The amount payable under the policy.
Premiums
What it costs each month to keep the policy in force.
Policy duration
How long it has been in force. Ideally, policies with a track record of 10 years or more.
The insured person
Their age and relevant circumstances.
Underwriting information
Medical details, only where you have authorised it.
Policy terms
The contract wording that governs the policy.
The insurer
Its requirements for transferring ownership.
Future costs
Premiums and administration over the policy's expected life.
Transaction costs
Legal, compliance and administration costs of the sale.

A change in circumstances is not a failure.

Behind every policy is a person. It may have been bought for children, a spouse, a business or a retirement. When you decide what to do with it, you deserve clear information and time to think.

Professional. Transparent. Respectful. Confidential. Structured.

What we will do

  • Assess your policy properly before making any offer
  • Explain the proposed sale in plain language
  • Give you every document to read before you sign
  • Leave the decision with you
  • Encourage you to get independent advice

What we won't do

  • Tell you that selling is the right decision
  • Promise that your policy qualifies
  • Promise a settlement amount before an assessment
  • Pressure you to accept an offer

Questions people ask us

If yours isn't here, call us on +27 10 017 3021. We'll answer it based on the information you can give us.

Can I sell my life insurance policy?

If it qualifies, yes. We buy qualifying life insurance policies in South Africa. Not every policy qualifies, so the first step is to tell us about yours and we'll check it against our criteria.

How much could I receive?

It depends on the policy. We don't pay a fixed percentage of the cover amount. We look at the benefit, the premiums, the policy terms, the insured person and the costs of the sale, and we won't quote a figure until the policy has been properly assessed.

What happens if I can no longer afford my premiums?

Contact us before the policy lapses. If it qualifies and we want to buy it, we may make you an offer. That gives you a structured way out instead of losing the policy and the premiums you've paid.

Should I cancel my policy?

We can't tell you that. We are not financial advisers, and selling isn't right for everyone. Speak to an authorised financial adviser, and before you cancel, have the policy assessed so you know every option you have.

What happens if my policy lapses?

Depending on your policy terms and any grace or reinstatement period, you may lose the cover and the benefit of everything you've paid in. Once a policy has lapsed there is usually nothing left to sell, so the earlier you contact us, the better.

What happens to the policy after I sell it?

Once the insurer has processed the transfer, Dignity Life International owns the policy, pays the future premiums and administers it for the rest of its life. When the benefit is paid, it is paid to us, not to your beneficiaries.

Do I have to accept an offer?

No. You are free to accept or decline any offer, and you can stop at any point before you sign. Equally, an assessment doesn't guarantee that we'll make an offer.

Is my information kept confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is one of our principles. We handle your personal information in line with POPIA, and we only ask for medical information with your consent.
